REY Resource Potential of Sediments in Sea Area of Minamitorishima Island: Evidence from REY Geochemistry of 21 Box Cores

The rare earth elements resources that have been found in deep sea sediments in recent years are considered to be potential marine metal resources after ocean polymetallic nodules, cobalt-rich crusts and hydrothermal sulfides(Kato et al., 2011; Zhu et al., 2015). In order to understand the rare-earth elements and yttrium(REY) enrichments of sediments in eastern sea area of Minamitorishima Island, we conducted ΣREY analysis tests on 21 box cores collected in this area. The results show that the highest value of ΣREY in surface sediments is 558.93μg/g, the minimum is just 274.22μg/g and the average is only 337.38μg/g, which is below the limit of ΣREY content of REY-rich deposits. This seems to imply that surface sediments in eastern sea area of Minamitorishima Island do not have the potential for rare earth resources. Fujinaga et al., 2016 have found that the ΣREY content of sediments in the southern sea area of Minamitorishima Island is up to 1000μg/g, while the ΣREY content in the northern sea area of Minamitorishima island is no more than 400μg/g. However, even surface REY-rich mud(mbsf < 0.5 m) in the southern sea area of Minamitorishima Island clearly exhibit characteristics of non-REY-rich mud(e.g. KR13-02 PC01, KR13-02 PC06, KR13-02 PC07). Our box cores are only 40 cm long, but the ΣREY contents of some stations are also more than 400μg/g. Considering that the sediment type of our study area is very similar to that of southern sea area of Minamitorishima Island. This may indicate that similar to the REY-rich mud in the southern sea area of Minamitorishima Island, sediments in our study area may have higher levels of REY resources in the deeper areas, but further sampling and verification are needed.
