Hydrocarbon enrichment law in the deep water area of the northeastern Rovuma Basin, East Africa

论文摘要

Deepening the study of hydrocarbon enrichment law of off-shore oil and gas bearing basins can promote the petroleum exploration and reduce the exploration risk. The hydrocarbon enrichment law has been summarized based on the analysis of petroleum geology of the discovered gas fields in the Rovuma Basin, East Africa. It is concluded that the main gas fields show the characteristics with vertical superposition of multi-layers, lateral overlap between multi-traps and independent accumulation among multi-type traps, based on the vertical and horizontal contact relations and distribution characteristics of hydrocarbon reservoirs. Reservoirs are mainly found in deep water turbidite sandstones of Paleocene-Oligocene. Deep-water turbidite sand bodies with different sedimentary types can come into being structure-fault gas reservoirs in the channel complexs, structure-strategraphy gas reservoirs in the lobe complexs and stratified gas reservoirs in the small lobes in the hydrocarbon-attractive area. The distributions and formations of gas reservoirs, the types and stages of the faults, and the distributions of the source rocks are comprehensively analyzed. There are three laws of hydrocarbon accumulation in the deepwater area of the Rovuma Basin. Firstly, the coincidence of continental uplift and fan defined the area of hydrocarbon accumulation. Secondly, the regional caprocks and faults controlled the vertical formations with hydrocarbon accumulation. Thirdly, the configuration of source rocks and faults constrained the regional extension of gas reservoirs. The development of Source rock and the preservation of gas reservoirs are the key controlling factors for hydrocarbon accumulation in the Rovuma Basin. The area with coincidence of Paleocene-Oligocene continental uplift and fan in the gentle slope zone of high-constructive Delta front of Rovuma Basin possesses the favorable hydrocarbon accumulation conditions and could form large-size hydrocarbon accumulations. The less-developed source rocks and poor preservation condition in the Davi uplift zone resulted in the absence of hydrocarbon accumulation.
