Over the last decade,there wasa huge progress in stem cell research.Induced pluripotent stem cells(iPSCs) especially have opened several ways of applicationsincluding drug development and biomedical engineeringthrough overcoming the limitation of embryonic stem cell (ESC) which has the ethical and immune rejectionproblems and breakthrough in cell differentiationtechnique.Since human iPSCsalso can be differentiated into almost type of human cellslike ESCsincluding cardiomyocyte,hepatocyte and neuron,these differentiated cells can be usedas an organ specific toxicity testing modelof new drug.In addition,several researches have shown that patient derived iPSCs or gene editeddisease iPSCs lines are proper model forin vitrodisease modeling and drug screening.PatientiPSC-derived human adult cells can recapitulatethe phenotypes of humandisease and new drug candidates whichhave an efficacy torescue these phenotypes can be screened by treating onthesecells.Before emerging stem research,there was no efficient treatment for genetic disorder such as type 1 diabetes which were caused by certain variants of the HLA-DQA1,HLA-DQB1,and HLA-DRB1 and Wilson’s disease which has a mutation in ATP7Bgene.However,enhancement of the gene editing technology and stem cell research provide the possibility of cure throughthe combination of cell therapy and gene therapy.Mutated gene of Patient derived iPSC can be fixed by gene editing method such as CRISPR/Cas9 system,then fixed iPSCs can be differentiated into specific cell types such as pancreatic cell or hepatocytes for transplantation.3D bioprinting technology make it possible to print specific tissue or organ on the dish.Though organ printing need more advanced biotechnology,3D printed cardiac patch which contain humaniPSC derived cardiomyocytescan rescue myocardial infarction and this method is already on the clinical trial.Here,I will introduce the applications of iPSCsin Drug development,Cell therapy and Biomedical engineeringand discuss future direction of stem cell research.
