Development and Distribution Rules of the Main Neoproterozoic Source & Reservoir Strata in the Yangtze Block, Southern China

In recent years, great breakthroughs of gas exploration have been made in Neoproterozoic in the Yangtze block, Southern China, as the Anyue super gas field has been discovered in the Sinian Dengying Formation at the central Sichuan region. How are the exploration potentials in Neoproterozoic at other parts of the Yangtze block? Making definition the development and distribution rules of the Neoproterozoic source & reservoir strata is of significant guiding value to the next step of deep zone gas explorations in the Yangtze block. By means of field surveying and sample collecting, the analyses of a large number of predecessor field sections and drilling logging data of the Neoproterozoic in the Yangtze block, and also source rock testing, the analysing of reservoir casting thin sections being used to study the organic geochemical characteristics of the main source rocks and reservoir characteristics, the distribution rules of the source & reservoir strata were determined by industrial mapping methods. Then based on the typical gas reservoir anatomy of the Neoproterozoic in the Yangtze block, the hydrocarbon accumulation rules were disclosured and the favorable Neoproterozoic gas accumulation plays in the Yangtze block were further predicted. There are three sets of source rocks in Neoproterozoic in the Yangtze block, including the Datangpo Formation, the Doushantuo Formation and the third member of the Dengying Formation. The source rock organic matter abundance of the Doushantuo Formation and the Datangpo Formation are good, while that of the third member of the Dengying Formation is poor. The organic type of the Third member of Dengying Formation and Doushantuo Formations source rocks is sapropelic Ι, while that of the Datangpo Formation is saprolite II1. From top to bottom, the thermal evolutions at the three sets of source rocks display increasing, with the third member of Dengying Formation reaching at the stage of over-maturation, while the Doushantuo Formation and Datangpo Formation entering at the thermal metamorphism stage. The original hydrocarbon-generating parent materials of three sets of source rocks of the Neoproterozoic were mainly lower aquatic organisms such as algae, and the more newer in age, the more dominant of the algaes. it may suggest the gradually growth of the blue-green algaes in Neoproterozoic. The distribution of the Datangpo Formation source rocks is relatively limited, with the thickness center being located in the Xiushan area of Chongqing and the Tongren area of Guizhou, and the thickness being about 50–250 m,, it rapidly thinned and disappeared to the east and west sides, which displays distributions of northeastward rift style. The source rocks of the Doushantuo Formation distributed widely with thickness being about 50–250 m and two thickness centers, one of which being located in the northern part of the northern margin of the Upper Yangtze, and the other being located in the junction areas of the Middle and t
